Carousing
I payed like a payer on the point of
Paying persistently [for] a golden pouring,
I payed freely [and] cheerfully,
4 A hard payment, by the light of Christ,
A payment, not [for] poor beer,
[But for] wine for my girl with golden hair.
I succeeded splendidly - I deserved peace,
8 Good, free, long, natural work,
Fitting passion of knowledge - in giving a worthy crop
[Of] the vines of France for [the one with] the white look of a
stream.
If we were on Easter Day in Gascony -
12 That will be soon - me and [the] gentle girl,
Our payment for our drink would be generous
In order to get ourselves a shining flow of claret.
According to the barman -
16 He loves me long and will be slow to hate me -
[It] is the fourth good day of poetry
Today, [at] my invitiation.
I then said, a false accusation,
20 'A pity that not only a third of the day were past'.
My two marks will cause - girl [with a] ready gift
-
The girl to drink.
For the sake of the girl wine was seen on the table
24 Pouring mightily.
The round is long, a wild region,
And bold is the love that drinks it.
Easily I drink, the spending of a most generous [one],
28 Easily does he drink who sees his lively girl.
