Neglected
I gave great love to a fair wine-fed girl
Like an arrow flies.
I'll gild every girl
4 With words of praise for her sake.
Woe me, bad is her memory
Of me, she does me harm.
I was once, in the presence of [the] beautiful gem,
8 A poet beloved by the fair girl with narrow brows,
But now, even though I do not cease
In pusuit of love, I am neglected.
I lay next to shoots
12 With the girl under trees, on the leaves.
I was a treasure, although I had no skill,
Skin-to-skin with that handy girl.
My girl does not wish, despite my existence
16 (Sinful world) to know me.
I shall not have any more, unless by force,
The young woman that I had.
The girl does not want, despite being respected,
20 (She was my wealth) to see me
Anymore than if, in a summer fair,
A beard and billy-goat horns were put upon me.
