Credo | |
I believe in the Lord from heaven,
splendid creed, He was kind,
Protector who keeps me from misadventure,
4 | blessing of the multitude, may God lead. |
Let him give freely, perfect Prince,
some advice to me how to praise
Jesus and Mary dearly and fittingly
8 | [to protect me] against dire need. |
It is right for everyone, name without settled form,
to praise God before all else.
Jesus the chosen one was good
12 | and his father and mother were good. |
Christ's father was the best father
of all the fathers of Christendom, bright bringer of joy.
May the host of heaven take us in!
16 | His mother was the best mother. |
He will be a warrant for every word of truth.
The son of Mary is the very best son.
The best girl beneath a golden crown,
20 | she is the fairest and most generous. |
It was good to bear a man from heaven
as our kinsman, mark of goodness.
This is the one whom [the prophets] promised to Israel.
24 | He was old and young and generous. |
He was born to suffer willingly
as a golden man and God of heaven.
The Lord Jesus made many
28 | of his followers apostles and saints. |
He made the Lord's Prayer and the mass,
He made prayers and learned books.
He gave belief to the common people,
32 | He distributed amongst them bread and wine. |
He gave his body on the rood tree
to redeem all the people of the world without forfeit.
For forty hours, fair glory,
36 | generous Jesus was in the grave. |
After our kinsman rose up
to fetch everyone from prison,
after the complete martyrdom,
40 | my Lord went up to heaven |
where the cross of God will be placed, says Saint Jerome,
and Christ the Lord will be proclaimed.
Neither the devil nor any of his kind
44 | will come (he cannot protect his progeny), |
true son of Mary, promise of love,
to conquer the kingdom of the Father.
Uttering [the name of] Jesus is a beneficial word,
48 | and it was Mary's favourite word. |
It is a word of love from the throne
and the Blessed Son was conceived from the word.
God is the word, faultless love,
52 | and the word is God our true Father. |
May God be our support and helper,
Amen, we wish for no more.
