Notes: 13 - Cywydd Mawl i Ifor Hael

It seems that it was in this poem that Dafydd bestowed upon Ifor the epithet 'Hael' by declaring, 'Rhoddaf yt brifenw Rhydderch' (line 14), Rhydderch Hael being one of the 'Three Generous Ones' (see TYP3 5–7, 493–5.). The epithet itself is not actually used of Ifor in this poem, and the only examples of it in Dafydd's seven poems to Ifor are the two at the end of 'Diolch am Fenig' (15.60 and 62), but he was consistently referred to as 'Ifor Hael' by 15th-century poets (see GLGC p. 662 for a list of references to him by Lewys Glyn Cothi).
