Work on the poems of Dafydd ap Gwilym began with a pilot project funded by the
AHRB in 2001–2, when Dawn Wooldridge was employed as a research assistant to
work on the early manuscripts under the direction of Professor Dafydd Johnston
of Swansea University and Mr Daniel Huws. A further grant was awarded by the
AHRB in 2002 for a four-year project to prepare a full edition. The project team
was led by Dafydd Johnston, and included three other members of university Welsh
Departments, Dr Huw Meirion Edwards (Aberystwyth), Dr Dylan Foster Evans
(Cardiff) and Dr A. Cynfael Lake (Swansea). Three research assistants were
employed during the period of the project, Dr Sara Elin Roberts (2002–6) who was
responsible for much of the manuscript transcription, for drafting the stemmas
and the bibliography, and for the content of the databases; Dr Elisa Moras
(2003–4) who began the work of preparing the electronic texts; and Mr Ifor ap
Dafydd (2005–7) who input most of the material onto the website. The website was
constructed by the project’s technical officer, Mr Alexander Roberts of Swansea
University Library and Information Services. The work of editing the texts was
divided between members of the project team as shown in the table below.
One poem of uncertain authorship was added after the launch of the main edition:
number 171, 'Englynion Bardd i'w Wallt', edited by Ann Parry Owen from the
University of Wales Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies. Authorship of the main sections of the Introduction is noted in the table of
contents. We wish to emphasise, nevertheless, that we have all benefited from
the advice and help of other members of the team, and that all the work of
the project is the result of close co-operation.
The website was launched at a conference held at Swansea University, 4 and 5
April 2007. The celebrations included a concert at the Dylan Thomas Centre
featuring Meredydd Evans singing three of Dafydd ap Gwilym’s poems accompanied
on the harp by Bethan Bryn, and Bill Taylor performing solo harp pieces from the
Robert ap Huw manuscript. A video recording of the concert can be viewed on the
website.
